The Government Inspector

peeping eye in map

The Government Inspector, a satirical farce by 19th century Ukrainian-born writer Nikolai Gogol, is a regular on global stages. Set in a small Russian village ‘in the fold of a bloody map’, the mayor and his cronies get wind of an incognito visit from a Government Inspector from the big smoke of St Petersburg. The only trouble is that they are all corrupt, the village is in disarray and the Government Inspector is not what he seems.

This production will make you laugh and then sting with the uncomfortable truths that lurk beneath the comedy.

The play’s director Helen Trenos says, “As director, I look for a play that entertains and as acting teacher, I look for a play that challenges students. The Government Inspector ticks both boxes. It is an iconic comedy and an acting workout for the students, requiring honed comedic skills.”
“On a more serious note,” she continues “The Government Inspector speaks to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and the ambitions of Putin. It is about corruption and despotism. As the Government Inspector warns ‘I see everything. I hear everything. I am everywhere. All around you! In front of you, beside you, behind you, inside you. I am everywhere. Everywhere! Everywhere! Everywhere!’

Don’t miss this whippet-paced comedy. Witty, polished and completely bonkers!
