Blackrock
By Nick Enright. Directed by Emily McLean
Blackrock was commissioned in Newcastle in 1991. Its starting point was the rape and murder of a local girl and the examination of a local community whose anger and grief were still dangerously unresolved. Blackrock became a piece that interrogates why any boy would harm any girl, and the potential danger in the delicate process of moving from childhood into adolescence. It is a critique of the limitations of Australian gender stereotypes and a snapshot of the schisms that class creates in our society. Sadly, topics still relevant today.
